"Willard received its first patients in October 1869 and by 1877 the Willard Asylum had become the largest mental institution in the entire U.S. Of the nearly 50,000 patients admitted over the years, about 50% left alive. About 6,000 are buried in the hospital cemetery, those whose bodies were not claimed by friends or families. The facility closed in 1995, causing great economic hardship to the local area. Presenter Walter Gable, the Seneca County Historian, weaves the history of Willard along with that of the world to paint a better picture than many would expect. In comparison to what Willard was replacing, it was a huge step forward in the treatment of the mentally ill. That's why it was called "A Great Experiment." Walter's knowledge of Willard comes not just from historical sources, books and articles, but also from his brother, who was an assistant cook at Willard. It is a fascinating talk that will make you cringe when the old methods of treatment are described. But don't be misled, even Willard is a place you wouldn't want to be."--Cover
